DOHA: There was an outpouring of condolences and prayers on Qatari social media on the death of Sheikh Aqel Farouq, one of the oldest local cupping therapists.

Sheikh Aqel Farouq leaves behind a commendable legacy in Doha’s natural medicine field, many people said on the social media.

One of the mourners also announced the launch of a charity initiative in the name of Farouq – a water well called “Abotaibah’s Well” in Nigeria which is expected to benefit more than 1,000 people.

Farouq was laid to rest at the Mesaimeer Cemetery on Wednesday following his passing on Monday evening, according to the local page, Qatar Deaths, though it didn’t mention the cause of death.

Farouq established one of the oldest cupping centres in Doha more than four decades ago, known as Abo Taibah Cupping Center, which was very popular among the local population.

Abo Taibah Cupping Center was also one of the pioneers of the natural remedy of cupping in Qatar.

The medical centre was named after Abu Taiba who was a cupping therapist during Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) time.

“We received with great sadness the news of the death of Sheikh Aqel Farouq, a prominent figure in the world of cupping in Qatar. It is a great loss for the community and we ask God to bestow His mercy on him and place him in His spacious Paradise. We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return,” Safwan bin Mohammed, a social media user, said on X.

Another social media user said his death marked a huge loss to the local community.

“He treated many people in Qatar with cupping, and he adhered to the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet, and he was keen on the good word. No matter how many of his virtues I mention, no post would do him justice,” Tawfiq Osama said on X.

Osama also announced the launched of a charity initiative under Farouq’s name – to create a water well named “Abotaibah’s Well” in Nigeria for 1,000 people.

He urged people to make online donations to the initiative through Qatar Charity.
