Chinese cars gain momentum in Qatar on affordability, quality

Doha: Chinese cars are increasingly becoming more popular in Qatar with several Chinese brands vying for a share of the market, resulting in a gradual increase in sales in the past few years.
While six years ago Chinese vehicles accounted for less than one percent of market share in Qatar, they have increased their share to 12 percent in 2022, posing a tough challenge to Japanese and South Korean brands, according to market sources.
There are more than 20 Chinese car brands in Qatar as of now and brands like Chery, Changan and Morris Garages (MG) are more visible on Qatar’s roads.
“So far, we have seen the sales percentage more than double in the last 3 years and it is still climbing,” Isam El-Bashier, General Manager of Elaf Motors that deals with Changan Automobile, told News Trail.
“Opting for a Chinese car not only provides economic advantages but often comes with extended warranties, offering peace of mind and cost-effective maintenance. Combine this with cutting-edge design elements, and you get a compelling package that balances reliability, style, and value for the discerning buyer,” he added.
El-Bashier said choosing a Chinese car is a pragmatic choice for budget-conscious consumers seeking value and innovation.
Mohamed Amine Ouni, Marketing Manager of Elite Motors Qatar, which represents Chery, said: “Consumers in Qatar have increasingly chosen Chinese brands not because it’s cheap but because it delivers a combination of affordability, innovative features, and a commitment to providing reliable transportation solutions. Positive word-of-mouth and a growing trust in the quality of Chinese-manufactured cars is what has also influenced consumer choices”.
“Chery Pro is the car of the moment and has been particularly popular in Qatar with higher sales due to its quality and innovation,” he adds.
Chery’s Exeed showcased two new electric models, Sterra ES, and ET, during the Geneva International Motor Show 2023, which was held in Qatar for the first time ever, with an aim to enter the local luxury electric car market.
Changan has been the second most selling brand in Qatar and their UNI series, in particular the UNI-K. has been the car that has been doing exceedingly well with the sales and they are looking forward to becoming the number one Chinese brand in Qatar, El-Bashier said.
