Al Asmakh district being developed into a tourist attraction that preserves the past

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is continuing to develop and maintain the historic buildings in Al Asmakh district, as part of the Doha Central District project, Al Raya reports.

The works include preserving the style and character of the old buildings and houses that reflect the Qatari architectural scene from the first half of the last century, and keep the components of old Doha districts in all their details.

The development of Al Asmakh district is divided into three areas. Al Asmakh 1 area contains Doha Pal-ace, Amna Bint Wahab School, the Cultural Gallery Building, the Mosque and cultural buildings, Sheikh Fahad Mosque and Palace, Al Jufairi Houses, and Doha Palace Hotel.

Al Asmakh 2 and 3 include a number of heritage buildings, mosques, and old houses that have been revived.

The Al Asmakh Neighbourhood Development Project, when completed, aims to be an attraction for citizens, residents and tourists. The project will also contributes to expanding tourism and commercial facilities in the area, especially since it is adjacent to Souq Waqif, Najada and Msheireb.

It is expected to be transformed into a distinctive tourist destination and provide citizens, residents and tourists with the opportunity to learn about the details of social life in the old neighbourhoods of Doha, creating a cultural destination that reflects important aspects of Doha’s history. It also aims to enhance the Qatari identity among the youth and introduce them to the neighbourhoods of their an-cestors.
After the opening of Al Asmakh District, it will be a tourist facility that combines the authenticity of the past with the features of the present.
