The US Embassy in Qatar celebrated the 249th anniversary of the Independence Day of the United States of America on Thursday with a special event titled “A Night of Champions,” emphasizing the role of sports diplomacy in fostering unity and understanding.
The event, held at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), saw an attendance of approximately 1,300 guests. US Ambassador to Qatar Timmy Davis welcomed guests of honour H E Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud, Minister of Public Health, H E Dr Ahmad Hassen Al-Hammadi, Secretary General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and H E Ambassador Ibrahim Youssef Fakhro, Director of Protocol Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Davis expressed gratitude to the Government of Qatar and key partners for their support and collaboration. He highlighted the significance of sports diplomacy, drawing parallels between the patience, skill, and teamwork required in both sports and diplomacy.
“Tonight, we commemorate the 249th anniversary of American independence – our birthday – celebrating our unwavering commitment to liberty, democracy, and justice. These principles are the heart of our nation, guiding us true in an ever-changing world. Diplomacy, much like sports, teaches us the value of perseverance, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. On this ‘Night of Champions,’ we honor those champions – in sport and throughout our history – whose dedication and achievements inspire us to push boundaries, reach new heights, and build a brighter future together,” said US Ambassador Timmy Davis.
The evening featured live performances by the US Air Force Central Band (AFCENT Band) and Qatar Music Academy’s Senior Youth Choir. Guests also enjoyed the traditional cake-cutting ceremony to commemorate American independence.
“As the US Air Force Central Band, we travel across 21 countries in Southwest and Central Asia, and it’s an honor to be here in Doha. One of the greatest joys of performing in the region is the cultural exchange—hearing the rich musical traditions of the Arabian Peninsula and sharing our own. Music connects us all,” First Lt. Julian Sconyers told News Trail.
