Qatar renames ‘elderly’ as ‘senior citizens’to honour wisdom and contribution

In a significant move that has drawn widespread praise on social media, Qatar has officially updated its terminology by replacing the word “elderly” with “senior citizens” in all government communications. The decision, seen as a gesture of respect and appreciation, aims to uplift the status of older citizens within the country.

This change was formally announced through Circular No. 20 for 2024, issued by Ibrahim bin Ali Al Mohannadi, the State Minister for Cabinet Affairs. The directive mandates the adoption of the term “senior citizens” across all official documentation and communication. According to the government, this update is part of a broader effort to recognize the contributions and wisdom of Qatar’s aging population.
The initiative was based on a proposal by the Ministry of Social Development and Family, which sought to promote the social status of older adults in Qatar. emphasizing their wisdom and contribution rather than their age.

The announcement has sparked positive reactions on social media platforms, with many users celebrating it as a progressive step towards dignifying the elderly.

Prominent voices have also endorsed the move, including Dr. Ali Al Qaradaghi, President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars. He stated, “Replacing the term ‘elderly’ with ‘senior citizens’ highlights the moral and social value of this group, emphasizing their critical role in our society.”
