DOHA: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has urged hunters to adhere to rules and guidelines during the hunting period to preserve the environment and maintaining biodiversity.

In a statement released on their official X account, the ministry said that the migratory bird hunting season, known as Lofo, commenced on September 1 and will run until February 15.

The MoECC urged people to follow instructions for hunting migratory birds, especially Houbara bustard, during this period.

“Commit to hunting the Houbara bustard with ‘falcons only’, and stay away from other hunting methods to ensure the preservation of the environment and its biodiversity,” the ministry said.

“With your commitment, we will preserve our environment and ensure the sustainability of hunting seasons in the coming years,” it continued.

The instruction to hunt the Houbara bustard exclusively with falcons is significant, as it is the traditional method of hunting.

The ministry had earlier strongly discouraged the use of modern equipment, such as electrical machines that mimic bird calls, warning that such devices could disrupt the natural habitat and harm other species of birds.

“Hunters must also refrain from disturbing bird nests, hunting for eggs, or damaging meadows and wild plants. Any disruption to the ecosystem could lead to long-term consequences, as birds might no longer trust the habitat,” it said

By adhering to these responsible hunting practices, the ministry hopes to ensure the sustainability of future hunting seasons while safeguarding the delicate balance of the natural environment.
