A forest is quietly growing and taking shape in Doha.

Thousands of trees that are compatible with the Qatari environment are growing at a place in the Gharrafat Al Rayyan area, which is expected to change the face of Doha.

“This urban forest contributes to increasing green spaces and enhancing sustainability and provides a fertile environ-ment to attract living creatures and birds. It also aims to integrate nature with the city and provides environmental and social benefits to residents,” Al Raya said in a report.

The establishment of the first urban forest in Doha comes within the “Park and Plant” initiative launched by Qatar Foundation several years ago, with the aim of transforming the squares of Education City into green spaces in addition to involving all members of society, along with the Education City community, in adopting sustainable practices by planting trees and transforming empty areas into shaded areas for pedestrians, the report said.

These goals are also consistent with the concept of environmental development, which is the fourth pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030.

The vast forest, which was implemented for the first time in Doha, will also increase the vegetation cover and green area. When the trees grow fully, the vacant land will turn into something resembling a forest.

The authorities are using an irrigation network that is suitable for the terrain and the climate, and is carrying out regular pruning of trees and plants to maintain their aesthetic appearance. It also includes paths to facilitate the movement of individuals and cars.
