Qatar’s legendary high jumper, Mutaz Barshim, has announced that the Paris 2024 Olympics will mark his final appearance at the Olympic Games. The Olympic gold medalist shared his emotional decision with fans on his social media account.

In his Instagram post, Barshim reflected on his illustrious career:

“Between the joy of achieving a dream and the sadness of its ending, the Paris Olympics 2024 will be my last Olympic participation.

I am very proud that I have achieved my sporting dream to be an Olympian and proud to raise the flag of my country Qatar in three consecutive Olympic sessions in a journey that lasted nine years. I started with my first Olympic participation in London 2012, a silver medal, Rio 2016 also a silver medal, and then Tokyo 2020 a gold medal.

I enjoyed my Olympic journey in all its sweet and bitter phases, all its hardships and challenges, from which I gained great experiences and learned countless lessons, which I hope to pass on to future generations.

And now, less than one month separates us from the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the last Olympic station for me as a player, and with pride and honor, I will be the flag bearer at the opening festival, God willing,” he said.

Barshim’s decision marks the end of an era for one of Qatar’s most celebrated athletes. His legacy will inspire future generations of athletes in Qatar and around the world.
