In a first, Ministry opens marine promenade for visually challenged in Al Wakra

Promenade, extending over 500 metres, is equipped with information signs in Braille and is made of recycled materials

The Ministry of Municipality has inaugurated the sustainable marine promenade for people with visual disabilities at Al Wakra Public Beach, in the presence of several heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the state and officials of ministries.

On this occasion, Director General of Al Wakrah Municipality Eng Mohammed Hassan Al Nuaimi said that the inauguration came within the framework of strengthening the institutional partnership with the private sector to serve all segments of society and meet their aspirations, including the category of people with visual disabilities.

Eng Soha Mahmoud Tufailya, who is supervising the implementation of the project, explained that the sustainable sea walkway for the blind represents the second phase of a project to develop a sustainable private beach that serves people with disabilities of all categories.

Its implementation began in 2022 through the establishment of a special sea walkway that connects people with mobility disabilities and the elderly to the closest point to the sea using environmentally friendly materials according to international standards.

She added that the project agrees with one of the basic provisions of the Al Wakra Initiative to reduce carbon emissions in the city of Al Wakra, in addition to its support for the ‘Al Wakra Friendly People with Disabilities’ initiative, which serves the goals of sustainable development and the Qatar National Vision 2030.

Eng Soha added that the new marine promenade extending 500 metres in length is equipped with information signs in Braille and is made of recycled materials, which is considered the first of its kind in the region and is consistent with the Ministry of Municipality’s strategy towards building sustainable cities and ‘humanising’ them.

It is worth noting that in April 2022, Al Wakrah Municipality opened a sustainable sea promenade for people with disabilities and the elderly, and equipped it with service facilities in accordance with high-quality sustainability standards. It has succeeded in attracting many visitors from the elderly and people with disabilities category.

The Al Wakra Municipality implemented many sustainability projects and initiatives that contributed to it receiving the UNESCO Learning Cities Award for 2021, making Al Wakra the first Gulf city to win the title
