Returned cheques a road to prison: MoI releases emotional video of female inmate

NT Bureau

Doha: In an emotional video, a female inmate of a Punitive and Correctional Institution has said ‘seeing her child cry outside while she was in court room destroyed her’.

The video was the latest and part of the Behind Bars series, an awareness campaign that Ministry of Interior had launched to create awareness among the public about the consequences of various crimes and deter people from committing them.

The female inmate said the mistake she committed was signing a cheque without ensuring that there were no sufficient funds in her account.

In the video, the inmate spoke in Arabic, with subtitles in English, of her regret over signing cheques without consulting anyone. “My regret is that I did not consider the future. I just thought about today,” she said.

“I could have avoided it. Don’t think that everything you think is right. I went to court and my son was crying outside the court. Sometimes at night I look at him and cry thinking why I put him in this position, which destroys me,” she said.

She further said that she could have controlled her behavior and avoided the situation by not signing the cheques.

The Ministry concluded the video by saying that a cheque with insufficient funds turns from a means of salvation to a road to prison.
