Saudi Arabia to join Miss Universe contest for the first time

JEDDAH: A 27-year-old model will be taking the Saudi flag to the Miss Universe stage for the first time in history, Khaleej Times has reported.

With a million Instagram followers under her belt, Rumy Al Qahtani, a seasoned beauty pageant contestant and influencer, revealed her selection to represent the kingdom in this globally renowned pageant.

The latest edition of the beauty event will be held in Mexico in September this year.
According to the report, Al Qahtani, hailing from Riyadh, is no stranger to the limelight, having previously competed in various international pageants, including the recent Miss and Mrs Global Asian held in Malaysia.

In Arabic on Instagram, she expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am privileged to be part of the Miss Universe 2024 competition, marking the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s inaugural presence in this prestigious event.’’

Accompanying the announcement were images showcasing her adorned in regal attire, donning a strapless, sequined gown, a tiara, and a sash, all while proudly holding the flag of Saudi Arabia.”
Amidst a series of progressive reforms aimed at modernizing and diversifying its economy, Saudi Arabia’s entry into the Miss Universe pageant is a notable development.

Notably, the kingdom has embarked on initiatives to promote tourism, welcoming international visitors and unveiling ambitious plans to enhance tourism infrastructure and attractions.
The previous edition of the Miss Universe pageant witnessed Miss Nicaragua, Sheynnis Palacios, being crowned as the winner in 2023.
