Doha: The Ministry of Municipality has made a breakthrough in recycling efforts towards sustainability and circular economy, in collaboration with the state agencies and private sector, said HE Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah.

Speaking to QNA during the Sustainability Excellence Award 2024 ceremony, at the Expo 2023 Doha, His Excellency asserted the Ministry’s e-services as an integral part to boost environmental sustainability and implement the country’s national sustainability and recycling plan.

His Excellency added that the Ministry is working to expand its multi-lateral partnerships in various areas to bolster sustainability and support the national economy.

Highlighting the role of digitization in boosting economy and digital societal development, HE Al Attiyah spoke about the huge attention the Ministry is attaching to artificial intelligence across its various sectors and departments, as part of the National Development Strategy and the Qatar National Vision 2030.

His Excellency’s remarks also coincided his participation in the launching ceremony of a book on the achievements and challenges of environmental sustainability in Qatar – an issue highlighting the country’s sustainability achievements in economic, social and environmental areas to continue modernity and development.

The book discusses a range of sustainability-linked issues, including the Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy, and the evolving sustainable cities nationwide and the green economy as a future investment pillar and the Ministry of Transport’s efforts for sustainability.

Speaking to QNA, Director of Land Transport Licensing Department, the Ministry of Transport, Hamad Ali Al Marri, said, the Ministry of Transport’s patronage of the newly released book is a testament to its pro-sustainability efforts over the past years including the infrastructure projects and services that reinforce the transportation and communications sector across the country.

These efforts culminated in developing an integrated, interconnected and sustainable transportation system, placing Qatar in a leading position on the map of the global transportation sector, and enabling it to host major global events, Al Marri said.

To help offer an environmentally friendly transportation experience, the electric buses adoption in public transport has grown to roughly 70 percent, supported by an integrated infrastructure that achieves multiple benefits, primarily saving energy and fuel consumption, cutting emissions and the countrys carbon footprint, and thus improving the quality of life, he added.

Part of these infrastructure projects is the Lusail Bus Depot, which secured the Guinness World Record as the world’s largest electric bus depot with a capacity of 478 buses and about 11,000 solar panel units that generate four megawatts per day, Al Marri added, affirming the Ministry of Transport’s aspirations for a 100-percent electric buses across Qatar by 2030.
