QDA holds course for private school nurses on diabetes

Doha: The Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), organized the 2nd advanced course for private school nurses, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), to improve the health of persons with diabetes and providing best care for them.

Executive Director of QDA Dr. Abdulla Al Hamaq pointed out that diabetes is one of the most chronic diseases in children during childhood and adulthood, adding that most of them are in the academic stages, stressing the need for nurses with experience and knowledge of diabetes to engage with students diagnosed with diabetes and achieve a safe environment that observes their health conditions.

Al Hamaq said that QDA, school departments and children’s parents are tirelessly working together to create this perfect environment, highlighting that the two-day course brought together 25 nurses as part of QDA’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the skills of school nurses who care for students diagnosed with diabetes during their stay in school campus and ensuring the provision of essential elements to care for their health and safety.

The course included many training workshops and lectures on diabetes about type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children, insulin, and its types, how to adjust doses, as well as workshops on high and low blood sugar and therapeutic methods.

The course addressed the importance of nutrition as a therapeutic element for controlling blood sugar, the importance of counting carbohydrates, as well as another practical workshop on nutrition to handle low blood sugar in students, and the role of nutrition when exercising.

Regarding the care and safety of students diagnosed with diabetes, the course discussed the responsibilities of nurses and the significance of routinely examining diabetes for students during emergency cases that might arise, the challenges facing the nurses and setting the solutions accordingly.

The course is organized by QDA within the program of students diagnosed with diabetes at schools to offer all elements of success in collaboration with partners, MoEHE, Primary Health Care Corporation and Sidra Medicine.
